Where people work
- Redstone Arsenal, on the southwest side: Army commands, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and many federal agencies. Gate traffic is the main commute factor.
- Cummings Research Park, on the west side near UAH: aerospace, defense and tech companies.
- Huntsville Hospital and the medical district, just south of downtown.
- UAH, between Research Park and downtown.
Living in central Huntsville, between all four, keeps most commutes under 15 minutes.
Downtown and MidCity
Downtown has Big Spring Park, restaurants and the courthouse square; MidCity, on the old mall site, has Topgolf, an amphitheater and newer apartments. Both have some of the city's highest rents. Many people live a few minutes out and drive in: from central Huntsville, downtown and MidCity are each about 7 minutes away.

Things newcomers learn fast
- You'll need a car. Huntsville is spread out and public transit is limited.
- Summers are hot. Ask how utilities work before you sign; air conditioning can double a power bill.
- Rush hour is short but real. Gate and Research Park traffic peaks early morning and late afternoon.
- Good places go fast, especially before summer internships and before fall semester.
Picking how long to commit
If you don't know the city yet, start short. A 30-day or few-month stay lets you learn which side of town fits your commute and your weekends before you commit to a 12-month lease or a home. Monthly and temporary rooms are built for that.
